SOUPS

Polish soups are excellent and you simply must try some of them. One of the best is the red borscht, the beetroot soup often served with dumplings or meat croquettes. The second soup you must have is “zurek” made of sour rye flour, served with an egg or sausages, very nutritious and simply delicious ( a perfect cure for a hangover).

DISHES

When in Cracow, you should definitely try “pierogi” – dumplings stuffed with meat, cottage cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and lots of others. They are very popular in Poland. The next very typical dish is the pork cutlet with mashed potatoes and browned sour cabbage – one of the most frequent at Polish homes, especially served on Sundays. Another favourite Polish dish is “bigos” made from sour cabbage, meat, sausages and bacon, all cut and cooked together with forest mushrooms, dried plums and red wine. This is a heavy dish – you must consider if your stomach is willing to cope with it.

SWEETS

As far as desserts go, you must visit some confectionery selling cakes. The most typical Cracow cakes are “sernik” – a cheese cake often with peaches or cherries and “szarlotka” – an apple cake, two layers of pastry and lots of grated apples in between. You will find “szarlotka” in most of Cracow cafés and pubs usually served hot with vanilla ice cream. It’s a perfect composition! Try it, you will always want more. And another typical Cracow cake is “makowiec” – the poppy – seed cake, really delicious.

DRINKS

The Polish beer has the opinion of being one of the best in the world so don’t hesitate and try Zywiec, Tyskie or Warka Strong. They are the most popular, but there are lots of others. And now the famous Polish vodka, a very strong and high quality beverage. There are lots of brands, clear like Wyborowa or Luksusowa or flavoured like Zubrowka or a cherry vodka Wisniowka. Try different and decide which is your favourite, but be careful! Don’t exaggerate with the number of shots because it’s really strong!
